  • Dying Alive

Hi! Wrote this maybe a week ago and posted it on facebook. Haven't been on xanga in a bit so here's somethin to read if ya want.

All men die but few men ever live. Those are the words of William Wallace, the hero and liberator of Scotland.
Men are like stars. We weave our courses throughout the span of time charting familiar paths through the security of previous trodden paths, and we keep a vast gulf between who we really are and everyone else, not allowing anyone to get too close. But those who look hard enough often, with a little bit of luck, see a reckless star careen across the canvas in a blaze of un-retainable vigor. They do not distance themselves from anyone out of fear, and will be as close to you as you will be to them. Their passion is unsurpassable, they feel things deeper. Love grows stronger, pain cuts deeper, and color is richer. They hope against hope, they fight when the strongest fail. They are not supermen, they are simply men, real men, as men were meant to be. In my lifetime I have known very few people like this, no more than I could count on one hand.

The greatest I can think of is the one who is my life, my liberty, my song: Jesus Christ. He did not retain his welcome as he bid Peter to walk upon the waves, he did not suppress his anger as he cast out moneychangers from the temple. He had compassion on his ever rebelling chosen people, his heart was torn as he cried over his Jerusalem, whom he wanted to gather unto himself so many times, but they wanted nothing to do with him. His heart was overjoyed as he thanked his father that he had chosen to reveal the wisdom of God unto the humblest among us. He hid not his tears, joy, reproof, he lived in complete honesty, and he was not entirely popular for it. He didn’t take bull from anyone, the Pharisees, the woman at the well, yet he was willing, I would say eager to draw the weak and wounded, the battered and hopeless unto himself. This love is the love which we rarely treat as more than a sermon filler or a plastic hollow topic that we all feel obligated to thank him for. Comfortable in the familiar, we distance our brothers and sisters in Christ, out of fear, maybe pride.

Jesus’ will is something that goes farther and much deeper than that we live moral lives based upon good logical standards and boundaries we build around ourselves to maintain our role in the stained glass masquerade. God’s passion is for the harvest, can you hear his heartbeat? While we are desperately struggling to tread water and keep from drowning in the cesspool of our arrogant, vain, cliquish society we built for ourselves, he sees the marriage being torn apart brick by brick by the same hurt and pride which keeps a smile on their lying faces and keeps them away from anyone who can help them. He sees the hurting young girl who’s Christian friends are too scared to even invite her to church, let alone share Christ as the answer to her deepest longings.

Let us know God, for to look upon his heart is to see love, to know him is to know love, combined with his thundering power, his awesome holiness, he is perfection, and he has stepped down to our level. We have no excuse for not stepping down to the level of those around us.

I’d rather be the one shooting star that someone remembers for their life that was never seen again than the many they see every night and never give a second thought to, guys lets get radical about our Jesus and what he is radical about. I hope that made sense, it is about 3:15 am so sometimes my thoughts get jumbled this early

  • The Re-Marketing of God

Have you ever questioned why it seems that each new generation feels the need to “re-invent” Christianity? Why does one generation view any literary, artistic, or musical work by a Contemporary Christian artist with distain, and on the other side of the pendulum, why are there those who practically believe that no hymn, book, or work created before 1960 could hold any relevance to the “new issues” of their life? Why do we see so many church divisions over eternally insignificant matters? It’s as if the many denominations and church movements are trying to tell the world and God what God (in their opinion)  should be like. These are important questions, but they are not new ones, and I am sure for specific situations there are specific and varying answers, but in this paper I would like to list a few that I believe are crucial to the Christian community and American Society today. Let’s go back in time to another place where a man from another culture seemed to be trying to tell the world and God what he thought God should be like, and what the result was when he did.
Jesus has just performed the well known miracle of feeding the five thousand, and has sailed away with his disciples. As they reach the Coasts of Caeserea Philippi he asks the disciples who people say that he is. They tell him that some say he is John the Baptist, or Elijah, or Jeremiah, or one of the prophets. Then he gets at what he is wanting to ask them. In Matt. 16:15 he says “But whom say ye that I am?” the text goes on to say “And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the son of the living God.” Now it was after this that Jesus began to tell his disciples how he would suffer and be killed and raised again. Let’s pick up the rest of the story in Verse 22:
“Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying: be it far from you, Lord: this will not be unto you.” the text goes on to say “and Jesus answered him and said surely Peter, if thou wantsest me not to die then I won’t.”
oops, wrong translation! That is NOT what Jesus said at all! He said “Get behind me, Satan, you are an offence unto me, for you savor not the things that are of God, but those that are of men.” Whoa! That’s kind of heavy, don’t you think? I did when I first read that passage, but let’s look closer at why Jesus was so disturbed at Peter’s remarks, and maybe we’ll see how this ties in to what we were originally talking about.
Peter was not just saying “No Jesus, don’t die, we need you too much here,” or “but Jesus we love you, don’t die.” Guys you can’t love God too much, and Jesus was not upset at Peter because of Peter’s love, he was upset because Peter was not interested in God or the things of God. He didn’t want to get in on what God was doing, he much preferred that God get in on what he was doing. Peter would rather that God not be so radical, so different, and when God starts talking about all this “crucifixion stuff” it really threw him off! Jesus was upset because Peter’s entire mindset was wrong because his view of the God-to-man relationship placed man’s priorities above God’s character. Just think about that for a second.
Now before we hang Peter let’s ask ourselves the question, are we really that much different than he? God is very radical, very different, and though he never contradicts himself or his own character, he does not fit inside the realm of our comprehension. If you try to keep God in a box and try to tame him, you won’t be able to follow him any further than the walls of your little box, you won’t be able to step out into the realm of the miraculous where He is! Let’s look at the rest of the passage, which really stresses this point:
Verse 24 says: “Then Jesus said to his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever will save his life shall lose it: and whoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.”
I believe a practical application from this passage for us is this: If anyone wants to know God, they must completely humble themselves and follow God where he goes. If you try to hold on to your opinions and desires in order to hang on to your life, you’ll lose it, but if you surrender it, and come to God, you will find life. You see that’s a fundamental principle of a Christian’s service to God, just getting involved in what God is wanting to do, knowing that you will probably have to drop a lot of your presuppositions about Him in order to walk closely with him. That’s what being transformed by the renewing of your mind is, (Rom 12), it means YOU DON’T STAY THE SAME!! That’s why so many churches are split over insignificant issues, that’s why I believe Christians feel the need to reinvent Christianity every generation. It’s my prayer for my church, my friends, my family, and myself that we will live in constant submission to God, so that when he does reveal his character to us in new ways, we don’t fight him, but instead draw closer to him. It’s a long road, and I hate to disappoint anyone but I’ve learned it’s not something you can just get over and done all at once, but God Is faithful, and he will not quit working on you till you are glorified with him and can see Jesus face to face.

Random/crazy story about an insane lady

    Hey Everyone,
Occasionally when I have spare time I enjoy writing to relax. I generally do not finish whatever song or story I am writing, and rarely ever post what I do finish (except for devotionals) but I came across this story I wrote and thought I'd put it on here, because my devotional I am working on may take a while longer and because my xanga needs something besides an essay! I guess you would classify it as a very odd children's story...idk whatever! ttyl

    Worst Pet Ever

I once knew a verry eccentric lady by the name of Mrs. McCratchen. She was the kind of lady who saved milk jugs because she "might be able to use it for something one day." Among her odd belongings she possessed a pet, a very strange pet which I definitely would not keep for myself. She kept it around many years until she died, and as I said, I really don’t know why. Let’s start at the beginning, you see, Mrs. McCratchen was an elderly lady, about seventy-two years old, when her husband, Lt. Col. Robert J. McCratchen III passed away at age 73. They had been married fifty four years, all but twelve of which he had served faithfully in the United States Army. Mrs. McCratchen was a shy lady, with no shortage of quirks, and had not become close to many people over the course of her lifetime, none, in fact, save her late husband, and her grandfather who passed away when she was a young child, so you see she considered it a blessing when one day she discovered a cat in the garden outside her back door.
The cat was black, and when she found it, had some scratches across it’s face, looking very thin and hungry. She decided to take it in and take care of it, naming it “Bobby” after her late husband. Bobby became a close friend in the absence of her husband. He required very little, save a place to rest when he was not called upon, yet something seemed missing from the pet-to-owner relationship. When Mrs. McCratchen would become lonely she would take Bobby from his little cat-house she had placed him in, and sit by the fire, stroking his lovely black hair, as she told him how lonely she was and spoke of the weather and other such things that old ladies speak about when feeling quite random and emotional.
To Mrs. McCratchen, the slightly unstable woman who once was my great aunt, Bobby seemed the perfect pet, but to any other person he would have been the worst. You may be wondering why.
After her death three summer’s ago my cousin and I were at her house sorting through her belongings. We found Bobby, who seemed about as responsive as a microwave dinner. It was beyond either of us to understand why the dear old woman would keep such a pet in her house for so many years, and we immediately discarded of him.
Oh, did I mention that Bobby had been found dead in her garden those many years ago, or that his “Cat house” was a plastic bag inside of an old freezer in her cellar?

There have always been, and very likely always will be those elevated into a position of public office with ample heart to serve their country but insufficient knowledge, wisdom, or experience to do so in the right way. Those who, according to their ignorance, step out against a legitimate injustice or evil, but never address the core issue, and likewise never accomplish their goal. Our nation and our times are not an exception. In an essay for the New York Times Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan addressed the very real problem of violence and crime committed with firearms, and offered a solution. He claimed that due to the fact that there were more firearms in circulation that U.S. Citizens, it was too late to stem what he referred to as the “gun problem,” and stated that it has become necessary to heavily tax ammunition or require that one have a federal license to purchase ammunition. In this essay I would like to convince you that though this is a noble cause, it is an insufficient solution and an incorrect analysis of the crisis plaguing our beautiful United States.
The belief that the cause of crimes committed with firearms in the United States is due to the existence and access of firearms in the United States is incorrect, for it does not reach past the surface. Allow me to explain. For quite some time the theory of evolution has been commonly and blindly accepted among the academic community and in the public education system without thought or regard to the consequences thereof.  Take for example a basic and fundamental principle from the teachings of Darwinism: the evolution of human life, without influence or intervention of a Creator. This is a principle which is being strongly advocated by our educators, but has inevitable and distasteful consequences. If all that life consists of is one species evolving above another, then all that humans are is an advanced form of animal. This greatly lowers the value of human life, and makes it justifiable within the worldview being promoted by the educators for an individual to do whatever is necessary for their survival, pleasure, or happiness because there is none greater to answer to than self. It is inconsistent to advocate this worldview in the classroom and at the same time be shocked at the state in which we have found our society, where violence is committed daily in the workplace, school, home, and other social outlets.
Now that I have addressed what the core issue is in the degradation of our society, I would like to address another aspect of Sen. Moynihan’s position. To place a high tax on ammunition or to make it necessary to apply for a federal license to purchase it would only inconvenience the law abiding citizens who are not attaining it through other means. Let’s talk about the Federal License idea. Did you know that to purchase a rifle or shotgun in the U. S. one must be 18 years of age or older and go through a background check, which must include no felonies? Furthermore did you know that in order to purchase a handgun one must be 21 years of age or older and go through the same background check? Also, did you know that there are a many criminals who attain firearms through alternate means in order to bypass the background check? I’m sure you knew these facts, and I know purchasing firearms is not the issue here, but follow the train of thought. Let’s say that in order to apply for this license one must:
        A. Be of a set age
        B. Have a clear criminal record including no felonies
Do you see it? The only person in any way inconvenienced is the respectable, law abiding citizen who is not attaining firearms or ammunition through illegal venues. My friend, the same applies for a high federal tax on ammunition. The only results will be the increase of illegal activity and the decrease of legal activity, punishing the innocent.
In the previous paragraphs I have done my best to show you that, however noble Sen. Moynihan’s attempts at justice may be, they are not grounded in reality and will not bring a lasting measure of peace. It is my belief that if the Senator is genuinely concerned for the violence in the United States he should take his battle to the classrooms, where the future violators are being taught in all practicality that they have none higher than themselves to answer to, and that because of that nothing which brings them pleasure is wrong. This is the mindset which is eating the future of America like virus through the body. These are the training grounds for future Virginia Techs and Columbines. This is the heart of what Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan refers to as the “gun problem.” They are the Darwinistic and Nihilistic worldviews promoted by public education. We are only experiencing the result of them. Let’s attack the root of the problem, instead of continually mowing over the weed of result.

  • Peace

Hey guys, well I was writing what started out to be a journal entry but became a message I desired to post on my blog instead. Just some reflections on Jesus Christ and a challenge to myself and everyone else. Mostly just random thoughts, and its a bit long. Anyway, God bless and ttyl
    -Ham

Peace. One word, yet over the centuries men and women have fought and died, searched and dreamed, longed and hoped for the presence of peace in their lives. Some thought it would come with justice, others with mercy. Some with gentleness, others with great power. The people of Ancient Israel are to be counted among those who dreamt for peace. At the time of Jesus they were held beneath the iron burden of their oppressor and conqueror, the Roman Empire, and they dreamed and prayed to God for peace and liberation from what held them in. They prayed for the return of the King. They prayed for the Messiah, and the Lord heard his people’s prayer. In a small town called Nazareth, he sent his only son, Emmanuel, God with us. He came not as the conqueror of an empire that his people dreamed of, but as a servant. You see, they were looking for the wrong thing. They wanted peace, but they wanted it their way. Nevertheless Jesus offered peace, as he offered himself, for the scriptures say “He is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of partition between us.” Despite this truth many people of that generation never experienced the peace which was so freely offered at Calvary, as the burden of the Oppressors named “Satan“, “Sin“, and “Self” were vanquished and stripped of power totally and eternally by the blood of a spotless lamb which was shed for the sake of all. Peace came, but was not forced upon us. The word of God is that “whoever will call upon the Name of the Lord will be saved.” Peace came, the perfect combination of Justice and Mercy, God and man, power and humility, but we must choose to call upon God to be our peace, his way not ours, or we, like many of those in the Generation which lived at the time of Jesus Christ, will never experience that peace.
This is a truth which has captivated my heart, soul, and the entirety of my being. It has forced me to take actions which have brought both praise and scorn, both respect and disgust. Often times it is so much easier to see the criticism of the fool than it is to see the care of the father, but I am encouraged by the Scriptures in proverbs which tell us that a man who seeks after righteousness and mercy will find life, righteousness and honor, that when we seek to do what is right we gain what is right, but we also gain life and honor. There have been times where I have lost much of what I once held so dear in this life. I have been, to borrow a phrase from Dr. Ed. Smith “slapped around by the body of Christ.” I’m sure you have all been there at one time or another, where the hurt which you were receiving was coming from “friendly fire” Though the pain of rejection for the cause of doing right will sear through your heart like a knife, you can have the peace of a present closeness with God which is much greater than pain. It is an unspeakable peace which I have felt it in many deep. dark times in my life, and I have felt it at many times of great prosperity. It is the hope that lies within me, it is Emmanuel, God with us, God with me, and knowing that I please him brings joy to my heart which words cannot describe and no tongue or language can fully communicate. There is a peace which passes my own comprehension, it is the peace of being with Christ, of knowing Him, and the power of his resurrection. To a person who has never experienced this peace, because they sought it in the wrong areas, there is no explanation. It is the biggest “inside joke” if you will, the great secret which can only be learned experientially, and for those of us who have experienced it, we know that in the moment you take hold of that peace you do not want to ever let it go.
This is the peace of the Blood of Jesus Christ, that in the darkest times of your life, when men curse you and revile you and say all manner of evil against you for the Lord’s sake, you are blessed. Not future tense, but presently blessed by the experiential love and knowledge of the God who is with us and who’s love we can feel and walk in, deeper into every moment of the day. It is “all things pertaining to life and godliness,” it is “life more abundantly,” it is Jesus, but only if we come to him on his terms, only if we seek him for who He is. May we not be guilty of the same sin as the world at the time of Jesus, may we seek him now, for who he is, and may we let him be the greatest adventure of our lifetime. This is the gospel, this is God with us, this is life with Jesus Christ, this is Peace.
